  1. The gnat is a small FLY of the family of
  2. MOSQUITO. It's eggs are laid in water,
  3. where they hatch into wormlike larvae, 
  4. which pass through a pupal stage to emerge
  5. as adult insects. The species include Culex
  6. pipiens, which are abundant in England, They
  7. carry malaria Anopheles maculipennis. The
  8. banded mosquito Aedes aegypti transmits 
  9. yellow fever. Only the female is capable of
  10. drawing blood from either a human or animal,
  11. since the male possesses no way of piercing.
