The gnat is a small FLY of the family of
MOSQUITO. It's eggs are laid in water,
where they hatch into wormlike larvae,
which pass through a pupal stage to emerge
as adult insects. The species include Culex
pipiens, which are abundant in England, They
carry malaria Anopheles maculipennis. The
banded mosquito Aedes aegypti transmits
yellow fever. Only the female is capable of
drawing blood from either a human or animal,
since the male possesses no way of piercing.
